The Two Sentence Rule – and why it works

In this podcast, I talk about how to speak in two sentences in many of the situations you financial advisors encounter in your prospecting travels. The Two Sentence Rule has all sorts of applications in financial advisor communications.

  • LinkedIn messages
  • Websites
  • Emails
  • Newsletters
  • Phone calls

We’re going to apply the Two Sentence Rule to financial advisor text messages in a minute, but first let’s cover the basics of what it is.

The main premise behind my Two Sentence Rule is to say one sentence that clarifies information, and then say a second sentence that asks a question or incites the prospect to take a specific action.

  • Two sentences only. Anything more and they have to scroll too much.
  • First sentence is a statement and the second sentence is best a question or exclamation. Then shut up.
  • Focus on one idea at a time.
  • Don’t give them too many options as for what you want them to do. There should be one clear call to action, and that’s it.

The Two Sentence Rule is of high importance to any financial advisor looking for new clients over LinkedIn, Facebook, or other social media messenger apps. And most of all, any text message a financial advisor sends has to be two sentences or less.

It’s not just about not making them scroll. The more important aspect of the Two Sentence Rule is that you want to avoid complex communications with someone you don’t know well. This is how communication over messaging apps is different from having a verbal conversation and it’s important to grasp.

Why do shorter text messages work for financial advisors?

Because financial advisor prospecting is tough; getting wealthy clients puts alot of pressure on the advisor and the prospect. There’s alot of moron salespeople who spoil it for the rest of the good advisors out there.

The objective of the Two Sentence Rule is to take pressure off you and the other person in the conversation by emphasizing what is important instead of getting distracted by the clutter. In the following section I’m going to teach you how to put together two sentence communications to use with prospects or clients of your RIA firm or financial advisor practice.

Financial advisor text message examples

Now, before we get into it, make sure you text compliantly and using secure, proper text message technology for financial advisors. Check with your compliance team if any questions.

Here are some financial advisor text message examples. These are not intro messages but rather follow up text messages that financial advisors can send to prospects they’ve already met with once.

#1 Meeting follow up text message

Jeremy here (always identify yourself in the text as they probably don’t have your phone number saved).

What was the biggest question/thought you had after our last meeting?

Note, when they answer back, don’t respond to their question over text. Use it as a hook to get them to meet with you again. And whatever you do, remember the rule: never ever send more than two sentences in a financial advisor text message.
